Its fame is well-earned, as it has done a good job of executing all the factors that make up a great anime.
Attack on Titan. On that note, don't watch Tokyo Ghoul, read it. The manga is so much better than the anime. I found the plot easy enough to follow, the fights were a bit confusing, but I feel like that's the case for other mangas as well. The fights are such a cluster fuck in the manga. I dropped it really fast.

It shares a lot of similarities with other shonen, but something it excels at is music and sound design. While Naruto has some great music, this series is a master at setting the right mood for any situation.
